….theres a lot of things I love in life… but there are few things i love more than hanging out with my grandpa Harry playing backgammon…..Granpda is WWII veteran and his stories about being at sea in the navy never grow old…..Harry is the only person in my family not born in California… he was born in West New York… he grew up a tough city kid until I think age 11 or 13 when he drove across country with his family in search of a new life out west… it was the time of the great depression…they would settle in Fresno like so many Armenians of that time did….and let it be know that was no easy thing… Armenians were discriminated against big time in California… they had to swim in separate pools, drink from separate water fountains… they were not allowed to buy land… the list goes on… and that was not just in Fresno. Harry is my grandpa on my moms side. So my moms dad. My grandpa on my dads side was named Levon. He was born in downtown LA in 1903. HIs family , also all Armenian had a cross burnt on their families lawn . You never hear about this in your history books do you kids…..Armenians faced two attempts at genocide by the Turks and then come to California to face discrimination…. funny how that works. Cant imagine what my great grandparents were thinking about this earth… but they continued on and that thought always humbles me… whenever i think i have it bad… come on.. I don’t even have a clue of what that means… See the reason the Turks wanted to get rid of the Armenians was because they were smart, and hard working and owned land and were prosperous. And when the Armenians came to California they were smart, and hard working and prosperous. Always a threat. But i guess if times tells us anything is that you can’t keep an Armenian down…. the trippy thing is that back in Armenia… yes Armenia is a country for those of you who don’t know… well they’re keeping each other down … corruption is a terrible thing….My grandpas Harrys wife was named Sue. My grandma Sue. She was such an awesome woman. I loved her so much. She always told me money was evil. She would say it every time i saw her…..the more i experience on this earth the more I see how right she was…speaking of money I rode my bike down to the Laemle on Wilshire to see Spring Breakers tonight…glad i went to see it…
….i guess in life we all hope we meet someone that inspires us.. that loves us… not only loves, but makes us feel loved….someone that teaches us…that makes and effort to understand us…. that makes us laugh… that makes us think….that tolerates us… that communicates with us….
Im often on an airplane so I guess thats why I’m going to say this next part… like have you ever been landing somewhere at night and you look out the window and you see those millions of lights below….when you are going somewhere foreign you might think wow thats pretty , wow this place is huge and you almost get a bit anxious…… but when you are landing home you might feel that comfort and that awesomeness of knowing one of those lights is your lights… or your families lights and that soon you will be there and warm and all of the sudden everything feels so good… I guess love is like this… or really caring for someone… its human nature to love… and everyone is at some point on that quest… i guess what I am saying that is what love feels like when you meet someone you really care about….out of all those millions of lights…one is flickering for you.. flickering in some pattern like morse code… saying welcome home… you are safe now……im here , you are here…. .i cant think of any greater comfort..
